VPN + Wifi Tethering = Extremely Slow

I have a vpn service that I connect to on a regular basis. I want to wifi tether to two other android devices with this VPN connection. However, when I have the VPN connected and wifi tether on my G4, the clients connect at a VERY slow rate (>1 kb/s). I can't even pull up a Google in Chrome because it's so slow.

I have seen on the interwebs that I need to run some iptables commands like so...

Code:

iptables -t filter -F FORWARD
iptables -t nat -F POSTROUTING
iptables -t filter -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE

But this has no effect. I think these procedures might be a little outdated since we are on 5.1. Does anyone know of a VPN+Tether procedure that works on our G4's?

Only need free tethering

So I just got my second replacement device. The first was acting goofy. I just dropped the second one and cracked the screen...thank god for the one time free screen fix...which is actually just a replacement device mailed to you. The current (cracked screen one) is modded. I have been finding my device doing random reboots or getting laggy.

So on to my question. Which ROM is as factory as possibly but free tethering enabled?

Reverse tethering.. it works but no DNS!

I've a Samsung S5 with CM12.1 + FakeWifi (Xposed).
I use the following script to reverse tether with ubuntu.

Code:

#!/bin/bash

ADB="adb"

# We need root on the host to mess with networking
if [[ $(whoami) != "root" ]]; then
echo "You must be root to run this script!"
  exit 1
fi;

# We need root on the device to mess with networking
$ADB -d root

# Keep NetworkManager from messing with the adapter
grep 'usb0 inet manual' /etc/network/interfaces
if [ ! $? ]; then
echo 'Configuring usb0 for manual control'
  echo 'iface usb0 inet manual' >> /etc/network/interfaces
  restart network-manager
fi

echo 'Setting up usb networking on device'
$ADB -d shell 'ip addr add 192.168.200.2/30 dev rndis0;\
ip link set rndis0 up; \
 ip route delete default; \
ip route add default via 192.168.200.1; \
  setprop net.dns1 192.168.200.1'

echo 'Setting up usb interface on the host'
ip addr flush dev usb0
ip addr add 192.168.200.1/30 dev usb0
ip link set usb0 up

# Turn off the firewall if one is active
echo 'Checking for ufw firewall'
which ufw && ufw status || ufw disable

echo 'Enabling NAT and IP Forwarding'
# Start forwarding and nat (use existing default gw)
iptables -F -t nat
iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -j MASQUERADE
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

echo 'Starting dnsmasq'
dnsmasq --interface=usb0 --no-dhcp-interface=usb0

echo 'Connection is active! Press any key to shutdown.'
read

echo 'Attempting to shut down reverse tethering'
killall dnsmasq
ip link set usb0 down
iptables -F -t nat
echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

echo 'Disabling usb networking on host'
$ADB shell ip route delete default

echo 'Disable and re-enable Wifi to return the device to normal'

Now the problem is that if I ping a public IP it works, but if I ping or curl the corresponding domain it fails "unknown host", "could not resolve".
What the heck should I do in order to make DNS working?
Thanks a lot for your help

Unlimited Tethering help

Tethering VZW - Important

If you go through the set-up process BEFORE you put in a VZW sim, then tethering works out of the box. Per MrBobrowitz:):good:

Bluetooth tethering not available

Hi,

I have an AT&T Galaxy S6 (unlocked by AT&T). I was just trying to connect it to my TomTom, but the TomTom doesn't even see it. So I thought that may be because BT tethering is not enabled. Looking through the tethering settings, there isn't even an option for BT tethering (only for mobile hotspot and USB tethering). Does anyone know how I can get that back?

I've also rooted and installed Clean ROM, but this hasn't fixed the problem. Any suggestions are welcome.

Cheers!

Wifi tethering option not available in hTC One M8

Hello everyone,
I received an hTC m8 (Harman Kardon edition) as a gift. When I received the device, it was factory locked through Sprint Mobile. After a lot of research on internet and on this forum, I have unlocked it to use GSM services in India, and its working fine now.

But now the problem is it does not have the Tethering option. I want to tether my M8's internet connection with other devices but it has no option to enable WiFi tethering or anything. I have also tried a few third party tethering app from play store like(FoxFi, Wifi Tether, etc..) but had no luck. They all failed to start the hotspot and establish a connection.

Screenshot: http://imgur.com/Tl3dxzD
Please help me, how can I enable the tethering or internet sharing option on my device.

Device Specs:
1: Model no: 831C
2: Rooted and Unlocked
3: Android Version - 4.4.2
4: S/w Version - 1.54.654.13

Please help me and let me know if more details are required about my device.

Slow Tethering

Just upgraded from M7 to M8 and while the phone gets lightning fast download speed of up to 50MBs the tether clients, whether they be another android or an IPhone or a windows Laptop suffer terribly slow download speeds. Anyone know a fix? Running Cynogenmod Nightly rooted s-on.

Motorola XT926 Droid RaZR HD hotspot and USB tethering not working

I am using refurbished version of this phone in Pakistan so this gives error that

In Pakistan there is no Verizon so how can I solve this problem?

I got caught tethering and I think I know why. any input please?

here's the message:
The plan for line ********** on your account includes unlimited 4G LTE data on-smartphone only. It also comes with up to 7GB of 4G LTE data for Smartphone Mobile HotSpot to share your phone's internet with other devices. T-Mobile's systems have detected that this line has actively used methods that conceal Smartphone Mobile Hotspot usage and, as a result, significantly exceeded the 7GB limit on its plan. This activity violates our Terms and Conditions. To enforce our Terms and Conditions and protect the network experience for all our customers, continued violation will result in the line being ineligible for its current plan and moving to our 1GB limited 4G LTE plan. Details at http://t-mo.co/1J4PTjw

I have an unlimited plan with T-Mobile. This month I only used about 80 GB's (which is low compared to most months. I typically use about 200 GB). The other phone on my account is a ATT Note 2, it's rooted and unlocked. We've used 180 GB's this month. The Note 2 number did not get the message. I know T-Mobile is pushing out this for people getting around the unlimited tethering. I've never had issues though with the year I've been with them. They're stating people are using 2TB's and that who they're going after for 3000 users. I'm nowhere close to that.

I'm running BlissPop on my d851. I recently did a wipe to install an update. Before I started tethering I forgot to switch the APN from IPV6 back to IPV4. IPV6 is much more traceable, and I know for stock d85* roms for Prime Tether it rids the ipv6 to enable tethering.

Could this be the main reason they caught me? I switched back to IPV4, but I'm weary to start tethering again. Do you think I'm flagged and screwed now? Or should IPv4 and a VPN conceal me?

Any input would be help

Warning to all those tethering with root.

So, today I woke up to a lovely text from T-Mobile warning that I have concealed tether usage data. The transcript of the text follows:

Regarding my tethering usage, I've only used a good 2GB extra than the mobile Hotspot allows. So, their idea of significantly exceeded seems pretty strict. So, even if you don't think you fall into the "percentile" of that one person using 2TB, to T-Mobile, you do. I'd still like to see them try to move me down to a lower plan though. I'll just leave and go to something like sprint.

So, I recommend being extremely careful. I have no idea how they detected it, but they are.

Flashed a stock ROM, USB tethering stopped working.

So basically my WIFi stopped working a few days, that "Unable to scan for networks" bug and i decided to flash a new ROM. Eventually i managed to get some 4.0.4 one working buuut the Wifi usb tethering was broken or something, so i decided to try and go back to the stock ROM (as a few other roms, including the CM11/12, weren't booting). I downloaded the European/Eastern European ROMs from this topic but for some reason the Tethering was still not working. My main phone's tethering is working perfectly fine but i don't want to ruin its battery by letting it charge all the time so i want to get my Explorer fixed. Any idea what could be causing this?

tl;dr : Stock ROM, usb tethering is not working, need help

PS: Tried the tethering on other PCs, didn't work. 3rd party tethering DOES work but it really kills the speed, hardly an option.

John Legere to lay down the ban hammer on those hacking tethering

According to John Legere, today is the day he will start cracking down on an estimated 3,000 heavy abusers, some who are using up to 2TB a month of data, by means of hacking the tethering ability on their phone. I wonder how many of you here will be hearing from John and the Executive team at T-Mobile? ;)

T-Mobile to tackle customers who abuse unlimited data

by:*ROB TRIGGS30 MINS AGO

93

201756

T-Mobile’s*John Legere has published an open letter to its consumers, informing them about upcoming action to be taken against individuals who have been “stealing data from T-Mobile”. While that might sound a little odd, the company is actually planning to target customers who have been abusing its unlimited data plans, by consuming as much as 2 terabytes of tethered data each month.

According to Legere, only a small fraction of consumers are abusing the rules. They have apparently been doing so by concealing tethered connections in an attempt to use high-speed LTE data as an alternative to a traditional broadband. Mobile bandwidth is a more limited resource, so these high consumption users are hogging resources that should be spread across a wider selection of T-Mobile customers.

“These aren’t naive amateurs; they are clever hackers who are willfully stealing for their own selfish gain. It’s a small group – 1/100 of a percent of our 59 million customers – but some of them are using as much as 2 terabytes (2,000GB!) of data in a month.”

To combat the issue, T-Mobile has apparently developed technology that is able to detect when customers are trying to hide their tethering activity. The company will be warning suspected customers about their activity before moving them over to a limited 4G LTE data plan, where it can more effectively cap their usage. T-Mobile has already identified 3,000 users who will begin hearing from the company this week.

“We’re warning these customers that they are violating our terms and conditions. If they continue to break the rules at any time, they’ll lose access to our Unlimited 4G LTE smartphone data plan and we’ll move them to a limited 4G LTE plan.”

The carrier is keen to point out that this decision is not about throttling the data of the vast majority of users who make sensible and fair use of their data plans. The company actually has a 7GB tethering limit on its unlimited data plan, after which speeds are already throttled down. T-Mobile is only after those customers which are deliberately trying to circumvent the contract rules regarding tethering.

Legere states that he “won’t let a few thieves ruin things for anyone else”, but do you feel that T-Mobile is treating its customers fairly?

OPPO’s major role in the competitive mid-range market

by:*SPONSORED POST1 HOUR AGO

56

2036

Over the past few years, the mid-range smartphone market has changed dramatically all over the world. With the specification wars raging on in full force, major handset manufacturers are constantly competing with each other for the top spot in the premium market segment. This comes at a price, though. Certain devices from major OEMs can cost upwards of 0 unlocked, but recently, it seems as though consumers*aren’t willing to pay as much*as they used to.

For those of us who aren’t willing to pay almost ,000 for a smartphone, what are our options? The mid-range market has been growing over the years, sure, though it’s been proven quite difficult to penetrate. Unlike*Motorola’s Moto G, which has arguably found the winning formula for great performance in the low-end market, mid-range devices haven’t quite hit their stride yet. It seems like many OEMs have been trying to find the correct balance between high-end specs and a low price point, but none have really produced too many memorable options that check all of the boxes.

Of course, this is just now beginning to change, as we’re now seeing a handful of notable smartphone makers*approach the winning recipe for success in the mid-range market. One OEM*that’s a good example of this is*OPPO, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer. Build quality and features aside, OPPO’s most recent mid-range offerings seem to check most of the boxes many consumers look for when seeking out a capable mid-ranger. Today we’re going to take a look at theOPPO R7*and*R7 Plus, two handsets that were announced last May, and how exactly these smartphones are providing a good example for the rest of the mid-range market to follow.

DON'T MISS:*OPPO R7 PLUS HANDS-ON AND FIRST LOOK7365

The OPPO R7 Series and the current mid-range market

OPPO announced its R7 and R7 Plus handsets back in May, and we’ve already*posted our full review*of the smaller handset. Suffice it to say, we’ve really enjoyed our time with the R7, and that’s no accident. The R7 features a 5.0-inch Super AMOLED display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, a*1.5 GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage and microSD expansion up to 128GB. Not only that, it comes with a non-removable*2,320mAh battery, a 13MP rear-facing camera with f/2.2 aperture and an 8MP front-facing camera. This device’s bigger brother, the R7 Plus, features mostly the same specs, but also boasts a 6.0-inch Full HD display, 32GB of base on-board storage and a much larger 4,100mAh battery.

These devices are being offered*starting at just 0 unlocked, which is a steal. However, that’s not really the most important thing, here. Sure, the mid-range market is arguably defined by the prices at which smartphones*are sold, but there’s more to it than that. When you’re not trying to create a phone that’s the most low-cost or highly-spec’d device out there, you need to focus on the overall user experience to bring*the ultimate value to users, which is what OPPO aimed to do with the R7 and R7 Plus.

When talking about specific features, both of these devices provide many enhancements that you normally would only see in high-end devices. The Color OS software overlay is highly customizable, and there are even a few nifty gestures built in to the device that allow you to launch specific applications or turn on the device more easily. There’s even an “eye protection display” mode that places a warm hue over everything when triggered, which is perfect for users with sensitive eyes. OPPO believes these are features most users will enjoy, but don’t readily have access to given the high price of other flagships on the market.

Consumers aren’t the only people who are excited about the R7 series. According to*Sino-Market Research, the R7’s launch in May bumped OPPO’s marketshare up in China’s offline markets, with the company managing to surpass Samsung the following month and today*only trailing Apple.*Not only do the specs and build quality help out with the R7’s successful sales, the naming scheme also has something to do with it, too. Customers will remember a product much easier*if the device names aren’t all over the place. For instance, Motorola’s Moto X, G and E lines employ a similar*strategy, in turn making it much easier for consumers to remember which products fit in where.

Where is the mid-range market headed?

In a global smartphone market that’s slowly adopting off-contract pricing and getting rid of carrier subsidies, the mid-range market*might see the most change out of all of the smartphone tiers. It used to be extremely difficult to afford an unlocked smartphone without a carrier’s help, but that’s changing now. Two or three years from now, if all carriers get rid of subsidies, nobody is going to want to pay almost ,000 on a smartphone, especially if there’s something comparable out there for less than half of the price.

With manufacturers like OPPO putting more and more focus on user experience as opposed to checking off boxes on the spec sheet, consumers are now starting to realize a great smartphone doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg. Because of this, the mid-range market will only grow from here.

WiFi Tethering stopped working

Hi. Some days ago I noticed that my P8000 tethering function stopped working. After flashing the 20150725 build everything was working fine. Now, even when I am able to connect my laptop via WiFi, I get no Internet access at all. The android DHCP server seems to work just fine (I can see that the system gets a proper network configuration and also that the gateway is reachable via ping) but there has to be something wrong with the DNS server because my laptop is not able to resolve names. I have also try connecting other devices. The result is always the same.

Any idea about how to troubleshoot this issue? I would like to keep this ROM running until the next build is released by Elephone.

Thanks.
