FIX for S-ON devices: Bootloop after OTA update when unlocked and rooted

Hi, I found a way to fix this bootloop which happens after you flash the latest ota update if you have unlocked and rooted your stock rom.
I own a HTC E8 China Unicom [M8Sw - dual sim], I don't know if it will work on other variants.

Requirements:
-some expertise with adb/flashing/twrp recovery management will be needed.
-stock firmware.zip, inside the OTA zip file, where you will find you stock recovery, boot image, etc
-Stock ROM, rooted with no modified existing system files
-TWRP Recovery the kernels from @Captain_Throwback works fine. http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-...overy-t3060188
-untouched Stock Kernel Modules (IMPORTANT)
-SchKernel Extra 3.3, to gain write permission to /system http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-...a-3-3-t3200090
-Battery +80 charge recommended...the process gonna demand a lot of power.
-Patience... loads of it.... :p

Before we begin, I want to make it clear that I am not responsible if you brick or damage you phone!!

It is the SU binary/files which are preventing the phone from updating correctly.
to be able to update... you need to unroot the phone before. Well, this was previously not possible due to system write protection.

But now we have a custom recovery mod which enables us to write to the system partition and thus can fully unroot with SuperSU apk itself.

Before you flash anything, be sure to have a working twrp full backup of you phone! In case anything goes wrong.

STEPS:

1. Copy the kernel 'modules' folder [found in system/lib/ in your phone] to another location ( for e.g. to your internal phone memory), you're gonna need it later.

2. Flash the twrp recovery if you haven't already and boot into TWRP recovery.

3. flash SchKernel Extra 3.3 kernel mod. It will launch the aroma installer. There will be options as overclocking/underclocking etc..
I left everything on STOCK option, disabled Swipe2sleep, unselected the everything in the optional addition page. Then went to install it.

4. Reboot, and open SuperSU app, go into setting, tap the FULL UNROOT option, this might take a while. The first time, when to unrooting notice shows and it seems that the app is not doing anything, you might be required to exit the app by pressing home button and swipe in recent list to close. Then open the app again a redo FULL UNROOT. If you exit the app and when re-opening the "unrooting notice" is still there, then it means it is working. This might take a bit of trial and error.

5. Ultimately, SuperSU app will close. Then you will need to reboot. You will see that SuperSU is gone and that you have no root access.
Ensure that all SU related files are gone in /system/xbin (daemonsu, su, supolicy). If not then something is wrong and I cannot say if the following steps will work.

6. Now, turn it off again to go to fastboot connect to PC and flash the stock boot.img via adb to restore the stock kernel.

8. There, mount /system partition and got to advance , root explorer/file manager.. (I forgot the name)

9. Now browse to /system/lib/ and delete the 'modules folder'. This is because the SchKernel Extra 3.3 kernel mod flashed previously will modify your kernel modules and when you will try to update the OTA, the stock recovery will report that xxxxx.ko has be modified and it will fail the update process.

10. Remember the previous 'modules' folder you copied previously, now move it to /system/lib/HERE , to replace the deleted folder. Don't try to overwrite the folder, it won't be possible. It said operation failed for me.

I also set the permission of the folder to 775.. which is think is unecessary.
Can someone please confirm that? :D

11. Reboot into fastboot mode, connect to PC (if not already), flash stock recovery.

12. Now, your good to flash the OTA updates. :good:

Donwload it if not already done.
If ever you have downloaded from PC and copied it to phone, and for whatever reason the phone is not detecting the zip file and asking for install.
Just move it to you exeternal SD card and rename it to "ptt.zip" , go into stock recovery and go down the list to "apply update from SD card"
and it should flash the zip file. When done, select the reboot option and it will say reboot to flash firmware.zip and the will boot. :fingers-crossed:

When booting it will take some time, and then go to the "optimizing apps" screen. This might take a lot of time if you have a lot of apps installed. The phone might get really hot during this process.

When the OS finally boot completely there will be an "HTC" screen and an exclamatin mark in the notification bar. >> NO WORRIES, it is the just the update working. It will go away when the update is fully processed.

I haven't tried rooting the device again as I'm still downloading other OTA updates while I'm writing this thread. But I think you should be able to root with twrp the usual way.

Hope I helped you. Don't forget to hit thanks ;)

Any suggestion and help would be much appreciated to simplify this tutorial and make it easier for the general users to understand. :good: :)

URGENT Xperia Z1 stuck in bootloop

Hi guys. First of all, I english isn't my first language so, be patient with me. Okay so, my device was running a CM-12.1 ROM and I decided to change it to the ROM that we can find in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/xper...ia-z1-t3201108, so, I flash it with TWRP Recovery and it got stuck in a endless bootloop (sony logo, boot animation, "NFC firmware act", reboot). I tried repairing it with Sony Bridge for Mac and it says that I have a custom ROM and it can't be repaired. Please, help me, I'm desperate.

Stuck on bootloop, and odin doesn't seem to work...

Hey,

As the title says the phone is stuck in bootloop after I was playing around with knox and enabled "Knox active protection" (the phone is rooted with pingpong...)
Sooooo the phone restarted and is now stuck in the loop :crying:

I know I had the latest update installed 5.1.1 I think and I live in Sweden so i should have the international thingy, but I don't really know more than that unfortunately... Searched around and found this thread but i was a bit too late for that warning, so i tried to flash the phone with odin but i only receive this message/error...
G920FXXU2BOFJ_G920FTEF2BOF1_G920FXXU2BOFJ_HOME.tar .mp5 <-- The name of the file I tried.

So I don't really know how to fix this problem and i've searched for info about it but i can't find any... And it's my only phone so I really need to fix it :(

Bootloop?

I think this novice has accidentally "bricked" his first phone in years. My new Nexus 6 just bootloops and will not connect via USB to my WIN 7PC. This occurred while rooting the phone with Wugs Root Tool Kit between unlocking and backup. Appears all data has been wiped. I can manually put this Nexus 6 into bootloader but it has no functions and returns to the little color moving dots. How do I "push" factory restore files to this phone? Any ideas? I successfully rooted two other Nexus 6 using this system two days ago so I am at a loss as to what happened. Thank you.

Recovering data from Bootloop?

Hi all,

First of all, my phone is completely vanilla, no rooting or modifications were done. Running 5.0

Here's my situation:
After fully charging the phone yesterday and sending some messages on whatsapp, I drove out to get food and while on the way there, the phone blacked out. At first, I was able to get to the colored dots loading screen but it would always get stuck there and shut off. Then I keep trying to restart it up and it got worse and worse, now I'm always stuck at the GOOGLE screen. I'm not sure if this is a boot loop issue as it just gets stuck at GOOGLE screen. I tried the recovery mode cache wipe and it gets stuck at the GOOGLE screen in the middle of the wipe, or blacks out.

So this morning, after fiddling around the power buttons some more, I am able to get the battery logo while charging, though it is weird that it shows 100% then completely drained the next minute or so. I try to load into the recovery mode again and this is what I see at the bottom

E: failed to mount /cache (invalid argument)
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: failed to mount /cache (invalid argument)
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: failed to mount /cache (invalid argument)
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: failed to mount /cache (invalid argument)

Am I screwed? I'm not sure what to do at this point.

Today, I am stuck at the colored dots boot animation but after smacking the power button side a bit, I'm back to being stuck on the Google screen. What's worse the recovery mode can't be maintained on the screen as it blacks out after 5-10 seconds. What can I do at this point?

I was going to use WUGfresh to reflasth the ROM but I think this wipe all data on he phone? Is there anything I can do at this point to retrieve all my apps, photos and what not? Nothing is backed up.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nexus 5 Stuck on bootloop -different

Hi Im new here sorry if i post in the wrong section.
My nexus 5 was purchased the date it came out and was never tinkered with (root unlock bootloader etc). On September 15th I received a OTA security update ~20mb from google, thought it was just an regular update so I accept it. After rebooting from the OTA update my device was just stuck at those flying circles boot animation (I left it there for 6hrs)! I contact google support and did all the steps, reboot, wipe cache in recovery, factory reset in recovery, with no success. Also i was told i'm out of warranty period so they cannot do anything about it even though their update broke my device... I then decide to take my own steps and unlocked the bootloader and flash the factory images from google. However, no matter how many times i tried flashing the 5.XX images following one of the XDA guides my device is still stuck at the flying circles! Even more weird flashing older 4.X.X images worked! But all the GApps crashes while I flashed the 4.X.X images and I do not know how to fix it. Doing an OTA update from google for 5.0 while i was in kitkat will put me back to the flying circle loops again. Can anyone help me here? I just want a normal phone thats why i never root of anything...
Thank you

Stuck in a bootloop after attempting to install Xposed. Uninstall failed. Help!

Somebody suggested installing Xposed Framework manually, which put me in a bootloop. Uninstall seemed to work, but then after restarting to clear the cache, the phone now constantly goes into a loop.

I can't seem to get into the Huawei recovery mode to reinstall the stock rom (supposedly it's volume up, volume down and insert the sim which does nothing at all, and power + Vol up, Vol down just puts me in TWRP).

Obviously my best option seems to be flash the stock firmware in fastboot mode, but when I extract the update.app there's no proper filenames and Huewei Finder doesn't seem to work with it.

Really do not know what to do, so any help will be appreciated!

Stuck in bootloop, can't flash

Posted in the general thread, but no replies.
I seem to have softbricked my phone by rooting then applying the OTA update. I've tried re-rooting, wiping cache, factory resetting, etc., and nothing seems to work. Following the steps in http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenf...d-zf2-t3127835 I can get to step 7, but when I submit any of the commands I get this:

Code:

C:\Users\Elliott\Downloads\CWM_Zenfone_2_Intel>fastboot flash fastboot droidboot.img
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
sending 'fastboot' (14822 KB)...

sending 'recovery' (11882 KB)...
OKAY [  0.545s]
writing 'recovery'...

C:\Users\Elliott\Downloads\CWM_Zenfone_2_Intel>fastboot flash boot boot.img
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
sending 'boot' (11868 KB)...
OKAY [  0.522s]
writing 'boot'...
FAILED (remote: Permission denied

C:\Users\Elliott\Downloads\CWM_Zenfone_2_Intel>fastboot flash system system.img
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
erasing 'system'...
FAILED (remote: Permission denied)
finished. total time: 125.564s

It wasn't clear if it was a windows permission error or an android permission error, so I tried an admin command prompt but that didn't change anything.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Get out of bootloop after failed root? How to custom ROM IN bootloop!?

Hi.

I tried to root my Note 4 (Sprint) a couple days ago with 5.0.1 software (Odin & CF Auto Root) on a 5.1.1 system. The root appeared to be successful, however, upon reboot, I got stuck in perpetual boot loop. I've tried factory restoring, cache clearing, etc etc. I feel hopeless. My last idea is to install custom ROM, but I don't know how to do this nor which would work, or if this would make it worse. It would, of course, need to be done in download mode (bootloop), and I'm not sure that's possible.

Thanks,
Jenn

S3 in bootloop after install Paranoid 5.1

Hi all!

I'm in troubles with my S3.

I downloaded paranoid 5.1 for S3 webparanoird /legacy/i9300 (pa_i9300-5.1-20150822.zip), then I saw that I had to download GAPPS , so I downloaded: androidrootz . com/2015/03/download-android-51x-lollipop-pa-gapps.html (STOCK version), and finllay I read that was recommended to use boeffla-kernel, so I went to his web and downloaded last version (boeffla-kernel-4.0-alpha13-CM12.1-NG-i9300.recovery.zip).

After get it all, I put it in the SDCard, I when in recovery, I did Wipes: dalvik, cache and data. Then I install in this order (I read this order somewhere) ROM, then, GAPPS, then wiped cache again, finally I install Boeffla kernel. Then wiped again dalvik and cache and rebooted the phone, but before reboot TRWP said If I wanted to root the phone, so I accept. Finally, phone restart, but is in bootloop from more than 30 mins.

How can -I make run the device,??

Thanks in advance

Shudy

Huawei Ascend P7 Bootloop

Hello,

Yesterday I was trying to root my phone and install a newer Rom. Rooting my phone was no problem (I used the KingUser Desktop app), but after that my phone restarted and kept loading the Huawei Logo...

I desperately tried to use this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/asce...tloop-t2904049 And followed the steps of the user "Wekii", but it didn't work at all...
I got to step 13, but then when "android system recovery 3e" tries to verify the file it gets stuck.

I used this Rom: http://www.carbontesla.com/2014/09/d...01c00b133sp01/

Can somebody point me in the right direction?

Kind regards,

brand new OP2 stuck in bootloop. Help please!!

so my whole day was wasted sitting at the house waiting to sign for this thing. get it at 4pm. go get myself a nano sim from ATT. opened the packaging in the att store. put in the sim and turned on the phone. before i can get through the ****in setup wizard the bitc** reboots. im like whatever. its the initial version of OOS. ill update that bitc** and ill be good.

phone boots up and goes right into another reboot. did this for *fuc*in EVERR!!! somehow managed to get in the os finally and i start to unlock dev options and **** so i can unlock it.

fastboot oem unlock goes fine. reboots and again im in boot loop city. after tinkering with this damn thing forever i finally found a way to get twrp on that ***** and im downloading the latest zip and im gonna sideload it into the storage so i can flash through recovery. hopefully that fixes this nonsense. will update if i get anywhere. pretty lame considering my opo was a ****in boss.

update: I flashed the latest OTA zip through TWRP and it still bootloops before i can get through the setup wizard. Any ideas? seems hardware related since reflashing didnt work. gonna try another rom and see what happens.

update 2: cant install exodus. installation hangs at "patching system unconditionally"

M8 stuck in bootloop(?)

Hey guys,

First off, any help here would be more than appreciated as I am at my wits' end.

So, i shall try and inform you guys as much as I can and hope it suffices. My M8 seems to be stuck in a bootloop. I can get to the bootloader (hboot & fastboot) and that's about it. I tried to flash a new recovery and kernel through fastboot but that doesn't seem to help either. My phone has been unlocked a long time ago but never had any problems until this suddenly happened.

Here is my oem info:
(bootloader) version: 0.5
(bootloader) version-bootloader: 3.16.0.0000
(bootloader) version-baseband: 1.15.2133156.UA03_2G

(bootloader) imei2: Not Support
(bootloader) meid: 00000000000000

(bootloader) boot-mode: FASTBOOT

PS- It is also interesting to note that when my phone is stuck on the white HTC screen, i can hear message notifications and such implying that the phone is still running ( I even mirrored my phone to the pc using USB and I can see my home screen on my laptop but just the HTC screen on the phone.

Thanks a ton in advance
