Is the age of owning phones over? Unrootable Verizon Note 4, 5, X, ?

No hope for my note 4 on B0G5.
No more root on Verizon or ATT flagships. Now I feel like I lease my B0G5 Note 4. Appropriate that it looks like "Bog".

Is that where it's all heading? All of our "smartphones" will only be leased by their carriers to serve their corporate advertising and sales goals?

I bought Android in the first place because I detested the herding that apple does with its customers, and how it locks their ecosystem. Now, Verizon and ATT have closed the open source door on devices.

I'm bummed. I think there's no freedom that won't be taken over by corporate interests, and strangled silent. Maybe my perspective is skewed- but now that a lot of players have been shaken out of the market, it seems vendors feel free to consolidate their hold and herd us down the cattle chutes to dine on our contracts.

Are we all turning into Apple owners now? Does anyone see a carrier/vendor/customer combo that will work in our interests going forward? Or is it over?

Steve
