Can you use an ExFat SD card with Xperia play

I am using an App that requires an ExFat SD card. Is such a format compatible with Xperia Play? Does it depend on the Rom you are using (I am using Gin2KitKat).

If it is compatible, what is the best way to format the SD Card?
