can xperia z boot without battery?

Hi,

So my phone hasnt been repaired for a while so i orderd a new screen and also found out that the battery was swollen and wouldnt work anymore. after the screen replacement, plugged it in but wouldnt boot. should it? or is this an indication that the phone really is broken?
