New Battery vs New Phone

Hello!
I appreciate all the threads where people post screenshots of their amazing battery life because they've disabled a bunch of apps, underclocked etc... but thank you for for not posting those kinds of responses to this query.

My understanding of mobile phone batteries is that they're Lithium Ion.... they're all the same chemical compounds, and newer phones just happen to last longer because the batteries are newer, or slightly larger. Am I wrong?
What hope might there be for an old Galaxy S2 with a new battery.... or does buying a new device really make that much of a difference to battery life?

I've replaced my battery several times, it's very hard to know if I'm buying a genuine one, or if the "high capacity" generic batteries are all consistently rubbish (I've been through about 8 batteries in both categories).

If there's spme amazing hardware breakthrough that the newer phones use, I'd love to read about it. Conversely, if a galaxy S 3,4,5,6.... is going to go through batteries in the same way- I'd like to know that before I buy some shiny new false hope.

Thanks for your help!!
;)
