Plugging in stereo jack disables microphone?

All my other phones, HTC One M8, Droid X, all work when getting a call, pauses music and the call goes through the speakers, but on this phone no one can hear me talk at all. Is there a setting I'm missing? Looks like the stereo jack is disabling the mic?
