Hi all,
I bought a 2nd hand HTC One m8, and today I tried to install the OTA fix for stagefright, and after my phone rebooted I was faced with the following error message (see attached photo): "Package expects build fingerprint of htc/telus_wwe/htc_m8:5.0.1/LRX22C/463267.2:user/release-keys or htc/telus_wwe/htc_m8:5.0.1/LRX22C/463267.3:user/release-keys; this device has htc/h3g_uk/htc_m8:5.0.2/LRX22G/509530.6:user/release-keys.".
After searching around, I found out that this is likely the result of rooting and modifying the system or flashing a custom recovery. So I booted into HBOOT and was greeted with (see 2nd photo):
Which seems to indicate that the device has indeed been tampered with.
I've searched around to try to figure out how I can restore my device to 100% stock firmware, but they all seem to require unlocking the bootloader and rooting the device. Do I have a simpler option? I tried saving the OTA zip file and extracting recovery.img from the firmware.zip file, but when I try to flash it via "fastboot flash recovery", I get:
It seems strange that the stock recovery image fails the signature verification?
I'd really appreciate any advice on how to resolve this situation - and preferably an option which doesn't require wiping my entire phone, since it takes me hours to set everything back up again...
If you've managed to read this far, I am grateful :) I never intended to mess around with the phone in the first place, I guess that's what I get for buying second hand....
PS. The phone is from Telus
