Headphone jack compatible with TRRS connector?

I have a pair of Etymotic hf2's, which are supposed to be 'android-compatible' canalphones with a built-in mic. I seem to recall being able to use these with older Android versions, although for the past few months I haven' been able to use them. The audio sounds washed out. I've read that this phone isn't compatible with TRRS connectors, although I do remember it working. Was this perhaps a fluke, do I have a bad memory, or perhaps was there a kernel audio SoC driver that changed that removed the compatibility?
