Had to FTF, confused on rooting

First let me say that I currently only have access to a Linux System (Ubuntu).
Secondly, I had to FTF. I messed something up and I FTF'd Android 4.4.2 / firmware .314.
I have been unable to root this firmware and install recovery.
Is there a "better" firware to root with?
