In a pickle after kingroot

Hello, newbie here. Sorry If I'm in the wrong place, just needed some advice. I recently rooted my moto g via king root then replaced it with super su via wolfdroid method with terminal emulator. I've read it was a bad choice to use kingroot. Well anyhow I wanted to be able to install a custom recovery but have read it's not possible unless I unlock the bootloader as kingroot bypasses that procedure. My question is, is it possible to install a custom recovery on my device with a bootloader? If not. What's the best way to fully u root without doing any damage? Thank you in advance
