Certifi-Gate: Posibility for root? Only on Fire OS 5?

Hi everybody,
I'm new here and I'm not such a big export, so please don't get too mad with me for maybe being stupid.
I newly acquired a Fire TV Box. I first I was a bit annoyed that USB mount wasn't possible on stock, but then I heard that the newest update fixes that. So I updated to 51.1.6.2
Well, USB mount works now but only for FAT32 which is okay but not very convenient. So I started to look for root possibility and found out that on my version (and probably even on original FW) root is only possible by accessing eMMC through a hardware mod. While I might manage to solder that stuff I would prefer a software solution.

So today I read about the new-ish Certifi-Gate exploit and how an app on Play Store managed to do root funcunality on stock rom:
h***://***.zdnet.com/article/certifi-gate-is-alive-well-and-hiding-in-android-devices/

This article mentions that this is only possible on Android 5 API. Is that true? I didn't read about that in any other article.
Maybe it's possible to create an app along the lines of Recordable Activator that just installs the su binary and grants root access?
Maybe this in only possible on Fire OS 5 Dev Preview? But maybe it's possible to get root there and then downgrade to the more stable pre-rooted 51.1.6.2 Fire OS 3?

As you can see I have a lot of questions. Maybe somebody can enlighten me or even help setting this up.
